Verdant breeding programmes are Target-Driven.
Conventional breeding is combined with innovation from our dynamic science programmes to accelerate the breeding of new superior varieties with improved yield, quality and harvesting traits, as well as pest and disease resistance.
This includes breeding by genotype. Parents are selected by their genetic constitution (DNA), and the predicted benefits are backed up by full performance testing in the field before release.
Semi-clonal crosses are sold as Verdant Select and are the “best of the best” commercial crosses selected from over 50 years of plant breeding.
Verdant’s semi-clonal crosses are produced in commercial quantities by cloning the female Dura parent and then crossing with the Pisifera male parent (not clonal) to produce the specifically selected Verdant Select cross.
A Dura clone, represented by just 100 genetically identical clonal palms, can annually produce one million seed of a single Verdant Select cross.
Only Verdant has the IP to produce the genetically pure parental lines needed for F1 Hybrid production, and F1 Hybrids in oil palm are at last a reality.
Verdant has an abundance of F1 Hybrid parents in development, and F1 Hybrid field testing has begun to select winning parental combinations for marketing.
Traits targeted include yield and its components (oil content and quality), precocity, height, harvesting efficiency, fruit morphology, kernel traits, pest and disease tolerance, stress tolerance, etc.
Diagnostic DNA markers, e.g. shell thickness, virescence and disease tolerance are used to select parents and to ensure progenies will carry combined traits that directly benefit growers.
