Verdant Select semi-clonal seeds are specific elite crosses from cloned female Dura palms – sold in commercial quantities – that result in very high early yield, high oil extraction rates, and greater palm uniformity.
This semi-clonal seed is at the cutting-edge of planting material available anywhere in the world today.
The female seed palm has been cloned so that one specific selected cross can be reproduced in commercial quantities.
A remarkable yield of 20 tonnes of FFB/ha has been achieved at Timbang Deli in the first year of harvest, starting as early as 26 months after planting.
With good management and decent conditions, yields of 12 tonnes of palm products/ha/yr are achievable.
Verdant Select’s increased genetic uniformity also offers greater operational efficiency for plantation companies through the production of more standard fresh fruit bunches, palm vigour, oil content, and ripening standards.
Verdant Select seed is semi clonal – only the female seed palm has been cloned – so that it does not have the associated flowering abnormality often experienced with Tenera clones.
Each specific Verdant Select cross will be clearly identified, so that it may be also planted in an identified and specific block (5-30 hectares).
The premium purchase price of this ‘high-tech’ seed is handsomely rewarded for Verdant’s customers by a much higher return on investment (ROI) than regular seed.
Verdant projects that – as per the Verdant Select yield profile shown below, with min and max depending on environmental conditions – one hectare of Verdant Select seeds will generate an additional US$22,000 – US$28,000 over 20 years.
This is calculated with commodity price assumptions of US$650 and US$300 per tonne for crude palm oil and palm kernel respectively, and with a 10% discount rate.
