Innovative & Enabling Biotechnologies

Our breeding programmes are underpinned with innovative biotech methodologies conducted in our laboratories at the Verdant Plantation Science Centre.

Pollen Laboratory

Strict quality controls are conducted throughout harvesting, processing and the storage of pollen to ensure pure and uncontaminated pollen is supplied to breeding programmes and used for commercial seed production.

Tissue Culture Laboratory

Tissue culture of leaf, inflorescence, meristem and other plant parts are developed on well established culture media to deliver future clonal parents.

Production of in vitro seedlings and ramets through secondary embryogenesis and regeneration is designed to multiply genotypes of interest.

Bunch and Oil Laboratory

Bunch and oil components are assayed for yield performance of breeding and commercial materials.

Tests include the identification of genetic material with specific oil quality.

DNA Extraction and Analysis Laboratories

Cell Biology

DNA content of the nucleus is confirmed, and aberrations noted for possible exploitation.

Plant Genomics

Robot technology allows over 20,000 DNA extractions of breeding and commercial materials annually. These are analysed combining various techniques (in-house and outsourced).

Soil Genomics

DNA extraction and analysis of soil provides a robust new tool to determine soil health, by investigating the status and composition of the soil microbial community, itself a key indicator of soil productivity. It also determines the presence or absence of diseases and beneficial organisms.
